Prayagraj - The Land Of Famous Kumbh Mela

History of Prayagraj -  

Emperor Akbar established the city of Allahabad. The great Mugal monarch realized this North Indian city’s geographic importance with a strategic waterway. He also built a fort, worth mentioning, near the confluence of Ganges and Yamuna here.   Under the British rule, this city was the place of origin of the Sepoy Mutiny against the British. Allahabad was the center of the movement for India’s independence. From October 2018 Allahabad has been renamed as Prayagraj.  

Location of Prayagraj -  

This unique North Indian city is situated in the state of Uttar Pradesh at the meeting point or ‘Sangam’of Rivers Ganges and Yamuna and mythical river Saraswati.

Fairs and Festivals in Prayagraj -  

 Being situated on the ancient site of the historically famous holy city of Prayag, Allahabad is the venue of many festivals and fairs. Most important among them is ‘Kumbha Mela’ taking place at the confluence of Ganges and Yamuna rivers. Millions of Indian pilgrims and foreign tourists throng this ‘Mela’ of international fame.

 It ranks 7th regarding the population of cities of Uttar Pradesh.  From long back the district of Allahabad has its Administrative headquarters in this city with the same name. Majority of people in this holy city perform various religious acts. Other than Ardha Kumbha, Kumbha and Maha Kumbha Melas, the annual celebration of Magh Mela, Makar Sankranti, Basant Panchami and Deepawali take place here. Naturally, tourism has gained importance here. Because of The University of Allahabad, founded in 1887, with its number of affiliated colleges, education has also thrived in this city.  This city has all three forms of modern transport, road, rail and air. Allahabad boasts of having many museums, temples, cathedrals (Anglican and Catholic) as well as the great Mosque,’Jami Masjid’.

Cuisines Of Prayagraj- 

At Allahabad, one can get the taste of multiple cuisines, stressing on the Mughlai type catered by various Dhabbas. Local food for the masses consists of Samosa, Kachauri, Chat, Baati Chokha, Khatte Channa, Dosa, Kulfi, Lassi, Rabri. ‘Paan’ kiosks also throng the city lanes.

Tourist Attractions in Prayagraj -

People of various tastes visiting this city get enthralled by its varied places of interest.  Pratisthanpur (Hindu) and Kaushambi (Buddhist) are two such ancient sites.  Among others, there are the Dashaswamedh Temple, Shankar Vimana Mandapam, Bharadwaj Ashram, Mankameshwar Mandir, Allahabad museum, Agharkar museum, Anatomy Museum, Archaeological Museum,  Ganganath Jha Kendriya Sanskrit Vidyapeeth, Company Bagh  Khusro bagh, Yamuna bridge, Minto Park, All Saints Cathedral, and Allahabad Fort are  to name a few.

How To Reach Prayagraj -

By Road - Allahabad is very well connected to the rest of India by the National and State Highways.

By Rail - The North Central Railway Zone in India has its headquarters in Allahabad. There are eight railway stations in this city.

By Air- Only 12 Km from Allahabad is the Bamrauli Air Force Base. It serves as the Allahabad Domestic Airport.
